College Anthem

English

LYRICS : MISS DOROTHY ANGHIE

Every Aloysian heart, past as well as present, warms at the very name of Dorothy Anghie. She was helping in every department of the College, besides being a regular and a well beloved teacher. Her many beautiful poems have been collected into a booklet, and her talent as a musician too, was known. She was given many English Anthems that had been so far produced, and out of this sorry lot she produced this one, which met with the unanimous approval of the College Anthem Board. Though she is no more with us, yet she lives and continues to inspire S.A.C. in this beautiful and expressive Anthem.

MUSIC : FR STROMER SIDICINUS. S.J.

This Jesuit hails from a small village in the Diocese of Teano, not far from Capua; hence the name Sidicinus. Teano’s Minor Seminary welcomed him at the age of 11, where he began his musical career. He continued his musical studies at the Papal Seminary in Posillipo, from where he joined the Society of Jesus, in June 1933. He came to the Mission of Galle, where he has been working since 1938 in the midst of youth. except for a short spell of 5 years. Music and singing have been part and parcel of his Apostolate amidst the musical youth of Lanka. The lively melody that inspires the Aloysians, as their Anthem, comes from the music that ever flows in his soul.

Lyrics

1. Aloysians all, our voice let’s raise In songs of loyalty, Let’s sing our Alma Mater’s praise : Here’s to our S.A.C. Aloysians all, let’s rally round, Aloysians young and old, Let’s cheer till loud our halls resound, Our Flag of Green and Gold.

CHORUS

Pure as the fillies of our crest Our thoughts and deeds e’er be ; Fresh as the sea-wind be our scot To keep right manfully The rule of S.A.C. We learnt at S.A.C., At halls of S.A.C., Beside the southern sea. Aloysians all, let’s young and old E’er loyal be to her, And ‘swath her banner Get-en and Gold Certa viriliter.

2. Let’s sing of all those selfless men Who served our S.A.C. Who feared to wield nor power nor pen Front self to set us free Let’s sing of Standaert, Van Reeth, Nest, Of Cooreman and Murphy To their great work let’s pay tribute, Let’s cheer them royally

3. Let’s sing of comrades of our youth, Of lessons that we learned To serve and work for love of truth Of youthful fire that burned Within our hearts, to strive to rise Above our common clay, When shone o’er blue and cloudless skies Pure light of youth’s bright day.

4. Aloysians all, let’s ever seek The truth to serve, defend To right the wrong, to help the soak, Be fair by foe or friend. Let us obey when Lanka calls nobly strive for her ,manfully whal’er befalls,

5. Aloysians all. let’s keep through life, Let’s keep right manfully,Through gladsome days or storms and strife, The rule of S.A.C.—To give and not to count the cost, As did our young Prince-Saint, Who rend’ring noble service, lost His life pure, free from taint.

6. Aloysians all, well neer forget Our games field and our shore The ringing cheers, the keen regret When heroes failed to score Debates in Hall, the laughs that rang O’er comedies we played ; The rich melodious songs se sang, The speeches that se made.

7. When toil is hard and vigour gone And minds are not serene, Let’s take fresh hope to labour on, Hope from our banner’s Green. When life’s toil o’er, our goal is won, May then ‘fore us unfold The golden harvest of work done, The glory of our Gold.

Sinhala

LYRICS : REV FR MOSES PERERA Mis. Ap.

A pioneer in Sinhala religious hymns, he has been spearheading the latest movement in the Church in Ceylon to make Catholicism at home in this dear land of ours. His flawless and fluent ‘hela’ Sinhala is musical in its purity and simplicity. As he says of him-self : ‘I am no composer of music : I have only music in me. Anyone who reads my compositions in the spirit I have chosen the words and the beats will know how to arrange the music suitable to capture my soul’s music.’ The wonderful spirit which he has filled our anthem with, shows in unmistakable fashion that Fr Moses is an intimate friend of the College.

MUSIC : Sangeetha Visharada SUNIL SANTHA

Sunil needs no introduction, specially in Galle, where he was teaching before left for India to qualify in music. The call of, music sounded deep down in his heart, after spending three years, first at the Shanthi Nikethan, and then in Lucknow, he returned to Ceylon. For eight beautiful years he captured Lanka with his lovely melodies and sweet voice. Everyone sang with him. But later, for the sake of a principle, he set aside the brilliance that was his, and now lives, away from the limelight. Working with his uncle, he produced a lovely set of hymns, and then our anthem.
